SJSU VSA “Legends” – Kevin Truong’s Ao Dai Fashion Show

On Friday, June 6, 2014, Crystal, Mandy, Cindy, and I participated in SJSU VSA’s “Legends” Culture Show during the Ao Dai Fashion Show segment, showcasing talented designer Kevin Truong’s work.  The Culture Show is annually held at the end of the school year and represents the culmination of what the VSA students have been tirelessly working on throughout the past year.  It is a celebration of Vietnamese culture by our generation and how it can be brought alive through a multitude of creative acts which also include singing, skits, and dance.  All proceeds from this year’s event went to support UVSA’s CPP: One Body Village, an organization dedicated to put an end to human trafficking in developing countries.

The couple of days leading up to the show consisted of late night practice run-through’s.  Fortunately, having had pageant experience, the walk was not too difficult to follow, although I had to get readjusted to walking in 5″ heels again!  On the day of, we arrived at SJSU to get our hair done (thank you Cindy!), changed into one of Kevin’s Ao Dai’s, and ran through a few more practice walks outside the auditorium before showtime. It was also a lovely pageant mini-reunion of sorts as some past MVNCI court members and representatives were there/participated as well!  My only regret of the night was not being able to come early enough to watch the beginning segments of the culture show.

Kevin’s Ao Dai Collection this year displayed thematic colors of red/black, and the overall gothic-inspired concept was hauntingly beautiful.  As the curtains drew open, we all strutted our stuff to make sure that Kevin’s designs and vision came alive on stage.  We are so glad to be invited to be apart of SJSU VSA’s culture show and to support a great cause.  A big thank you to Kevin for lending his time and efforts to support the event, and major props to Evelyn Nguyen, the executive producer, and the SJSU VSA students for putting on a successful evening of entertainment!
