March Community Service: Curry Senior Center

On Sunday, March 22, 2015, Crystal, Cindy, and I spent our afternoon serving lunch to seniors at the Curry Senior Center, located in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco.  Upon our arrival, we checked in with Laura, the coordinator of the meal program at the center.  She gave us a quick overview of the program and the lunch service schedule.  The center provides essential social services to low-income seniors which includes healthcare, housing, and meals, to name a few.   There was a good turnout of about a dozen total volunteers that day.  In the kitchen, we met “Vergi”, the head cook, who...

2014 AT&T Autumn Moon Festival

It’s that time of year again for moon cake!  On Saturday, September 6, 2014, MVNCI was invited by the Miss Asian Global (MAG) organization to attend the 24th Annual AT&T Autumn Moon Festival in Chinatown San Francisco.  The festival transforms Grant Avenue into a street filled with lively entertainments such as arts & crafts, cultural exhibits, authentic food, and children’s activities.  It was originally held in 1991 to bring in more business to shops in Chinatown, and has since been held every year thereafter. August Community Service: Neighborhood Harvest Food Pantry

On Saturday morning, August 23, 2014, Christina, Mandy, Cindy, and I volunteered at the Neighborhood Harvest Food Pantry in San Francisco, located in the Inner Richmond district.  The event is hosted by the St. John’s Presbyterian Church every Saturday morning and it provides free groceries to neighborhood families/individuals in need.  They serve about 280 low-income families weekly, which constitutes about a total of 800 family members!  Upon arrival, we were all assigned stations to hand out food at among the line of different stations.  Christina and I were assigned to pears, Mandy to small cartons of orange juice, and Cindy to bags...

The 3rd Annual OMI / Excelsior Beacon Community and Family Resource Fair

The Annual Community & Family Resource Fair this year was held at James Denman Middle School on Saturday, April 6th in San Francisco. The OMI/Excelsior Beacon Center partnered with James Denman to organize this event to provide information from a variety of organizations and programs to local families. MVNCI 2013 court was excited to be a part of this event. The staff were so kind and friendly. OMI/Excelsior Beacon Center’s Community Program BBQ Kickoff in San Francisco

  On the evening of Wednesday August 29th, members of the Miss Vietnam of Northern California Intercollegiate team volunteered at OMI/Excelsior Beacon Center’s Community Program BBQ Kickoff in San Francisco.  The team helped out with various activities such as setting up the venue, assisting attendees to fill out their registration forms, serving foods and refreshments, and wrapping up the event.  The Community Program BBQ Kickoff drew hundreds of eager attendees of all ages from the local community to register for a wide range of free evening classes: yoga, line dancing, salsa, and Zumba to name a few.  Classes start this week,...
