On Saturday, July 26, 2014, Christina, Crystal, Cindy, and I volunteered at the Brides Against Breast Cancer bridal show event in Emeryville. It marks the 2nd year that MVNCI has volunteered for this event. The 2013 Court had such a great time there last year that they recommended the event to us, and we were not disappointed! Our main task was to help soon-to-be brides select and try on discounted designer wedding gowns. The wedding gowns are able to be offered at incredible savings because they have been generously donated by designers, manufacturers, bridal shops, and individuals. All proceeds from the event go on to support services that provide education, information, and outreach to men, women, and children affected by cancer. When we arrived, we were ushered to the back of the room where a group volunteer orientation was taking place. Our tasks and the wedding gown purchasing process were explained to us in detail. Once a soon-to-be bride has found her dream wedding gown, we were all encouraged to ring the bell in celebration! When the soon-to-be brides were first let into the room, the event organizers and guest vendors introduced themselves and shared how they have been personally affected by cancer. It was touching to hear their stories and I’m sure it gave us all a greater sense of purpose for being there that day. Afterwards, a mini dance competition was held (with a live DJ in-house!) to give away a free pair of wedding bands to the one who danced to the loudest cheers. Then, the ladies were let loose to shop! Although we were kept busy, we were so happy to hear the bell ring many, many times throughout our time there! We had an enjoyable time at the event, and I’m sure we will definitely recommend it to the next Court as well.
